CHIHUAHUAS FROM HAWAI’IAll Tutu’s Tiny Tots, whether puppies or adult dogs, pure or mixed, are bred with three things in mind: 1) health of sire and dam as well as their puppies; 2) friendliness of our dogs to humans as well as other dogs; and, 3) genetically sound animals with highest quality characteristics including superior bloodlines.HEALTH: All our dogs have received their puppy shots and annual boosters that are age appropriate and required to prevent major canine diseases. A rabies vaccination is not required since Hawai’i is the only state in the United States that is rabies-free. We use a combination injectable vaccine that includes immunization against Canine Distemper, Adenovirus Type 2, Coronavirus, Parainfluenza, Parvovirus and Leptospira Canicola. At approximately two weeks old, our puppies begin a regime of deworming with Pyrantel Pamoate every two weeks until their first vet exam. At two months old, our puppies are started on monthly doses of a topical medication to prevent heartworms while controlling fleas, intestinal worms, mange, ear mites and lice. Our dogs are fed with home-created meals made from organic chicken, vegetables and rice. We are working toward the creation of vegan-focused meals.cabinkennels.jpgSOCIABILITY: All our dogs and puppies are raised on a 35′ x 50′ pool deck with very close proximity to our living cabin. When the weather permits, our breeders are free to sun themselves on the deck, play with other adult breeders and sniff the puppies in their own playpen (6′ x 6′ chain link kennel with rubber-matted floor). When a dam is ready to deliver her puppies, she is moved to her own space in our maternity ward (7′ x 9′, double-door and windowed cabin) where she stays with her pups until she decides to wean them (usually around 6-8 weeks). She has time on the deck with the other dogs when the sun is shining for as long as she wants. After our puppies are weaned, they are moved to their own cabin until they are placed in their forever homes.BLOODLINES: One very important consideration in raising dogs is serious attention to the gene pool. A limited gene pool such as in Hawai’i, can cause faulty genes to become widespread and the breed loses vigor. Therefore, to bring in dogs from outside of Hawai’i for breeding allows for new qualities or reintroduces lost qualities and increases vigor. Tutu’s Tiny Tots dogs include a balance of purebred chihuahuas from breeders in Hawai’i and purebred chihuahuas from the mainland. AKC puppies or adults that prove to have undesirable qualities are usually neutered or spayed and sold as cherished pets or family companions. We are always happy to provide references with phone numbers from recent and past buyers, and the office phone number to our vet.
